look for the helpers.

helpersI felt a little icky posting what I had planned for today after yesterday's events, so I elected to share just some simple thoughts with you today. Even though this is not the first time something like this has happened in our country or in the world, I feel a collective heart drop whenever something as senseless as these bombings at the Boston Marathon finish line happens.

It also breaks my heart to hear so many people griping about what is wrong with humanity. When I look at the terrible footage of the event, what makes me tear up just as much as the injuries and evil of the act is seeing how many people ran towards the explosion instantly, helping those who were afflicted. Race workers, medics, police, bystanders...there were so many people helping the injured. There were also reports of runners who ran straight to hospitals to donate blood for the victims. Seriously, you ran 26 miles and then you went and gave blood? Remarkable.

A quote that has been everywhere since the event comes from dear Mr. Rogers: "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" How true those words are. Instead of thinking that humanity is in trouble, remember that the number of people running to help at a disaster far outnumbers the number that orchestrated it.
